A new case has come to the fore, where a fraud of Rs 7 lakh took place in the matter of paying the electricity bill. In a Mumbai case, a 65-year-old woman suffered a loss of over Rs 7 lakh in a cyber fraud after she replied to a fake SMS about outstanding electricity bill.

According to the news of ANI, a woman living in Andheri area of Mumbai received an SMS on her husband’s phone regarding the outstanding electricity bill. Also, in the last message, it was warned that if the bill is not paid, the electricity of the house will be disconnected. The SMS also had a phone number to contact for payment.

The woman felt that the message had come from the Electricity Department, so she called the number on the message. A person picked up the call and introduced himself as an employee of Adani Electricity office. The person further assured the victim that he would help her with the bill payment and asked her to download the “TeamViewer Quick Support” app.
7 lakh rupees went in three times
Following the instructions, the victim downloaded the app and shared the ID and passcode giving the caller access to her mobile phone. After some time, the victim received three SMS back-to-back regarding transactions of Rs 4,62,959, Rs 1,39,900 and Rs 89,000. A total of Rs 6,91,859 was withdrawn from his account. As soon as the fraud was detected, the woman along with her daughter went to the Andheri police station and lodged an FIR for the fraud. The Police is investigating.
